Regulation (EU) 2025/327 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 February 2025 on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) ('EHDS' or 'the EHDS Regulation') represents a key step towards the digitalization and transformation of the European health system.

The EHDS represents a major step forward in accessing, sharing and (re)using health data in all Member States of the European Union and is designed to benefit all EU citizens, including patients, healthcare professionals, scientists and researchers, policy makers and sectoral actors.

The aim is to ensure better availability, interoperability and secure exchange of health data between EU Member States for the purpose of:
  • healthcare continuity (primary use),
  • reuse of existing data collected during primary use for scientific research purposes, public interest, policy support (secondary use)

The main pillars of the EHDS:
  1. Creation and operation of the National Contact Point for eHealth of the Slovak Republic (primary use of health data),
  2. Establishment of parts of the health data access body in the Slovak Republic (secondary use of health data).
